Harrison-
Where did a year go?
You are officially walking, as of your first birthday. You can follow us, and do, around the entire house without 'plopping' down once! Truly an amazing thing to watch. When I think about it, I wonder if you will be the same about making the decision to try new things like you were about walking (careful, deliberate and confident, trying it once you were comfortable and ready, not when someone tried to make you), or like you were about jumping off the side of the pool, or going down a slide (do first, think later, and hope there is someone there to catch you and fix your boo-boo)? Time will definitely tell.
You have started talking, a bunch. Though it is rarely in words that we understand, you are definitely telling us something! ...
You have started to shake your head NO!! Most of the time it is in opposition to something, and you are very dramatic about it!! Occasionally, you do it and smile, then end up wanting what you said no to. You are learning. You have started to do the "all done" sign when you are eating. You tend to hit your sippie cup off your high chair when you do it, but we will take what we get. Now, we need to work on "more, please" this summer, when you are back to eating a ton, like before.
We packed up your winter clothes, and most of your 12 month clothes. You are into 18 month, 12-18 month and even 18-24 month clothing, which is great since that is what I bought when you were a tiny baby last year. You really like to be barefoot right now. I think it helps you walk, and you get hot with leather shoes on. Grandpa has tried to make you like wearing hats, and it is somewhat working. You seem to keep a few choice hats on your head, and you constantly reach for my sunglasses, so I am hopeful you will wear both this summer.
Sadly, you were sick for your first birthday week. We simply postponed everything to the week after your birthday, hence this letter coming to you at a little over 1 year old. We will be going to the doctor in about a week, so I will have to update your stats on your 13 month letter. You are getting your bottom molars, so that has been an additional challenge this month, but you are trying hard to not let it bother you too much (and by the way, your tooth total on your first birthday was 9). They have made it difficult to sleep, but being sick has been a challenge to your sleep, too. You have gotten better about going to sleep on your own, and even prefer it some nights. We are happy, though, that you still like to snuggle up with us every once and a while.
Speaking of your birthday...it rained and stormed all morning, then rained and stormed all the next day, but there were a few short hours of sun for your birthday party! You tried cake, after some coaxing, but you were much more interested in getting the sticky stuff off your hands. You got it off your hands by putting it in your hair. To be honest, we wanted you to make a mess because it makes for the best pictures of your first time trying cake!
Right now, you are most into standing on the stool in front of the window and looking out, or climbing anything you figure out how to climb. You got some Weebles for your birthday, and they seem to be the toy of the moment. You are still happy to play on your own, you just cover more ground in doing so. You are getting more interested in sitting while we read you a book, as long as you can turn the pages whenever you feel like it. So, we don't always get through the entire book, but we are happy that you are starting to enjoy reading with us (because it is so important...and yes, you will hear this a lot!).
We have a had the best, most challenging, and most rewarding year of our lives with you. We would NEVER change a single thing about it.
We SUPER love you,
Mom (and Dad, too)
